I’ve been all in on iCloud Photo Library since Apple replaced iPhoto with the new Photos app on the Mac last year and I haven’t looked back since. I pay $2.99/month to sync my 13,206 photos and 1,087 videos (plus iOS device backups) with iCloud, and this allows me to take or save photos and videos from any device and have them appear across the others including the web, edits, albums, and all....

Apple has updated Final Cut Pro with support for native import, editing, and export of MXF video files, along with the capability to edit video encoded with Panasonic’s AVC-LongG codec. Several issues are fixed in this update as well, including problems importing certain clips from specific cameras, App Nap stopping long import operations, and errors in handling of 240fps video. Xcode was also update with fixes for common SourceKit crashes when using the new Swift language....

Facebook will soon make it somewhat easier to see how your personal information changes hands for ad targeting. TechCrunch reports that starting later this month, tapping on the “Why am I seeing this ad?” drop down will allow you to see new information. In the past, Facebook’s “Why am I seeing this ad?” interface has only shown details about the brand that purchased the ad and basic demographic targeting details. Starting on February 28th, however, it will also show when your contact information was uploaded and when it changed hands....
As we reported last night, Facebook’s new Slingshot app is now available for iPhone. The app briefly appeared on the App Store last week but was quickly removed. Slingshot is Facebook’s attempt at competing with the popular Snapchat messaging service. Slingshot allows users send a photo or video with text or drawings to another person. The recipient, however, can not open the picture without acknowledging that they want to open it and “sling” another image back to the initial sender....

Bloomberg reports the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is launching a first of its kind inquiry into medical diagnosis apps starting with the ‘uChek’ urine analysis app from Biosense Technologies. The free app, which is currently still on the App Store, requires users to purchase a kit containing urine test strips that can be visually analyzed with the iPhone’s camera. The problem, according to a letter sent to Biosense from the FDA, is the fact that the test strips have only been cleared for “direct visual reading” and not automated analysis from an application:...

Director F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) is developing a movie based on Deep Silver’s popular action game series Saints Row. The adaptation will be scripted by Greg Russo, who is also writing the script for the movie reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise. Developed by Volition and published by Deep Silver, the Saints Row games have a lot in common with the better-known Grand Theft Auto series. There seems no end in sight to the Facebook privacy saga. Facebook first revealed that up to 87M people may have had their data harvested by Cambridge Analytica, 71M of them Americans. The political consultancy denies this, TechCrunch reporting that it claims to have licensed data for up to 30M people, and saying that none of this data was used to help the Trump campaign … Whether the true number is 30M, 87M or somewhere in between, Facebook says that ‘malicious actors’ used search tools on the site to collect data on most of the network’s two billion users....
Facebook Messenger today announced three new features launching in its iOS app: QR Codes and Payment Links, new Quick Reply Bar, and more themes such as Olivia Rodrigo, Pride, F9, and more. QR codes and payment links in Messenger enable users to send and receive money from anyone, even if they aren’t Facebook friends. This feature is rolling out to US Messenger users, and there’s no need to download a separate payment app or add new contacts on the fly....
Facebook announced on its Developer Blog today (via TechCrunch) that it is improving its mobile app install ads by providing a number of new options for both users and developers when viewing and creating ads. Perhaps the most interesting is the ability for iOS 6 users to install apps from ads within the Facebook iOS app without leaving the app—a feature Apple opened up to developers with iOS 6. In other words, ads in the Facebook app will no longer pull you into the App Store....
