Guardians of the Galaxy’s final Easter egg has been partially found. Marvel Studios love peppering hidden references in their films. Whether that be for a potential connection link for future movies, a simple homage to the comic books or just a fun detail, they tend to hide them every where. While every MCU installment has its fair share of Easter eggs, the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise arguably has the most intriguing bits, and proof of that is the ongoing search for some Easter eggs that have yet to be found until today.

That says a lot with regard to Gunn’s ability to hide these Easter eggs considering that it’s been half a decade since the first Guardians of the Galaxy came out. Since then, a lot has happened in front and behind the camera for the MCU sub-franchise. The cosmic heroes have already met up with the Avengers and most of them perished at the end of Avengers: Infinity War and resurrected in Avengers: Endgame. Gunn himself, went through a roller coaster of events having been fired to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 only to be reinstated several months later. Through it all, one final Easter egg from the original film remains to be unfounded - until now, although with one little caveat.

It turns out, Guardians of the Galaxy’s final Easter egg may have been partially discovered. Gunn was asked on Twitter about the continued hunt for the said reference. The director said that it has been uncovered - but not entirely. The director didn’t name drop who found it, but user @MasterTainment’s reply implies that he might be it, with Gunn seemingly confirmed the idea. Check out their back-and-forth below:

So, based on @MasterTainment’s discovery, the Easter egg has something to do with the reference to the Celestial nature of Peter Quill’s father and grandfather - a bit that was confirmed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with the introduction of Ego (Kurt Russell). The coordinates for Knowhere in the 2014 movie can be decoded to “Meredith Quill BD” or “Meredith Quill X.” “BD” can refer to as baby daddy or “X” as ex - regardless, they both point to Ego. @MasterTainment’s added some new information regarding this theory with The Dark Aster’s coordinates are supposedly hinting toward Quill’s father giving his mom cancer - another detail confirmed in the sequel.

However, @MasterTainment also needs to re-examine some parts of his theory given Gunn’s statement that he got it partially incorrect. Most of the things he has uncovered thus far were all confirmed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and it’s possible that the Guardians of the Galaxy Easter egg was only in reference to the sequel. But it’s also not outside the realm of possibility that it has something to do with the other details about Quill and his ancestry that have yet to be revealed. As of now, the author continues to work on this thesis and it may not be long before he figures the whole thing out.
