The Fate of the Furious hits theaters in just over a month, meaning it’s high-time that Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray’s Fast & Furious installment got its second U.S. trailer. Universal Pictures launched the initial trailer for the eighth Fast & Furious adventure back in December of last year, in the process revealing the movie’s “big twist”: that Mr. “You Never Turn Your Back On Family” himself, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) has now turned his back on his extended family.
Subsequent TV promos and international trailers for Fate of the Furious have kept a lid on the secret behind why Dom turns to the dark side, only suggesting that the film’s main villain - a high-tech terrorist known as simply Cipher (Oscar-winner Charlize Theron) - has some sort of dirt on Dom and is forcing him to carry out her dirty work. The new U.S. trailer for Fate of the Furious further drives that idea home, even as it better showcases some of Cipher’s “high-tech” criminal capabilities.
The newly-released U.S. trailer for The Fate of the Furious is now online (see above) and it too further plays up the mystery surrounding Cipher’s methods for blackmailing Dom. Most of the footage featured here is instead focused on highlighting the stunts and flashy action sequences in the film - action sequences that, somehow, are poised to either match or exceed the larger-than-life spectacle from director James Wan’s Furious 7 (a movie that, lest we forget, included cars sky-diving out of a cargo plane), in terms of sheer ridiculousness.
The new Fate of the Furious trailer, in turn, sheds light on some of the strange events that fans witnessed watching the film’s production from afar. For example, the scene in which Cipher takes control of nearly every car in New York that’s glimpsed here, was filmed in Cleveland and involved actual cars being tossed out of buildings. Fate of the Furious is also pushing the envelope further than previous Fast & Furious installments, in making this franchise an international affair. As the new trailer highlights, this movie in particular hops around the globe from New York to Cuba and Iceland, before returning to the franchise’s roots in Los Angeles.
Fate of the Furious also continues to evolve the Fast & Furious property towards having a true international ensemble; with new additions Theron and her fellow Oscar-winner Helen Mirren joining the core Fast & Furious crew (including, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson and Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges) and Furious 7 newcomers Jason Statham, Kurt Russell and Nathalie Emmanuel returning in expanded capacities, this time around. While the promise of over the top vehicular destruction is this franchise’s biggest selling point for its global audience, the chemistry and banter between its cast members has proven just as important to the franchise’s ongoing success. Based on Gray’s track record on ensemble movies such as Straight Outta Compton and The Italian Job, he should be able to deliver on both of those fronts here.
