The first trailer for the much-anticipated animated series, Fast & Furious: Spy Racers was just released, and it introduces the world to Dom Toretto’s cousin, Tony Toretto. Spy Racers will be the newest addition to the popular, multi-billion dollar Fast & Furious franchise. The Fast series revolves around a team of street racers/criminals who throughout the course of the franchise end up saving the world multiple times. Since the very first film, the Fast series and its characters have become a part of the collective popular culture, going as far as to spawn hundreds of Fast and the Furious memes.
Spy Racers will bring the popular franchise onto the small screen and will be geared toward younger audiences. Dom’s cousin Tony, the protagonist of the series, will be portrayed by Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf). Executive producers for the show include Vin Diesel, Chris Morgan, and Neal H. Moritz; all of whom are also producers on the Fast & Furious movies. The story will follow Tony as he and his friends are recruited by a government organization to infiltrate a crime syndicate called SH1FT3R. SH1FT3R has plans for world domination, and it’ll be up to Tony and his friends to stop them.
The trailer, uploaded on the DreamWorksTV YouTube channel, opens with Tony Toretto talking about how he will follow in his cousin Dom’s footsteps and become the next great street racer, much to the chagrin of his friends, who doubt him. The trailer then cuts to the group of friends being recruited by the government to stop SH1FT3R, an elite racing league which serves as a front for a crime organization. The kids show excitement about becoming undercover spy racers. The trailer shows stunning set pieces of fast cars driving over rooftops, parachuting, jumping out of trains, and of course, street racing, as well as the snappy one liners and quips fans of the Fast & Furious franchise are already accustomed to. The showrunners for Spy Racers are Tim Hedrick (Voltron Legendary Defender) and Bret Haaland (All Hail King Julien). The series was created by Universal and DreamWorks Animation and will air worldwide on Netflix on December 26, 2019. Check out the trailer below:
In addition to Tyler Posey, the Spy Racers cast also includes Camille Ramsey (American Vandal), Luke Youngblood (Harry Potter), Charlet Chung (Overwatch), Jorge Diaz (Jane the Virgin), and Similce Diesel. Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton) will play the head of the government organization, Ms. Nowhere. The villainous leader of SH1FT3R, Shashi Dhar, will be portrayed by Manish Dayal (The Resident). There will also be a host of guest stars such as Jimmy Tatro and Carlos Alazraqui.
Every new Fast & Furious movie has taken the franchise to a whole new level, upping the high-octane action set pieces and plot elements. Much of the franchise has revolved around the same family, so it’ll be exciting to be introduced to a brand new set of characters. The animated series, while geared toward younger audiences, still appears to maintain the same elements of the original franchise fans love to watch. Perhaps this will be a start of a long line of Fast-related shows, with there already being murmurs of a Hobbs & Shaw TV series. Lots of exciting developments about the Fast franchise having been popping up lately, showing a promising future to the already well-established series. Towards the end of the above Fast & Furious: Spy Racers trailer, Ms. Nowhere asks if Toretto is ready for this. Toretto is indeed ready, and so are fans.
