Fast & Furious 9 will arrive into movie theaters around the world on May 22, 2020, but its trailer will drop long before that - here’s when it’s slated to release. The blockbuster will bring Justin Lin back into the Fast & Furious director’s chair for the first time since Fast & Furious 6 in 2013. Also returning for this new adventure will be franchise mainstays Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster. Meanwhile, the Fast & Furious 9 cast includes John Cena, Cardi B and Michael Rooker as new characters for the high-octane proceedings.

Many blockbusters aiming for release in the first half of 2020 debuted their first trailers in December 2019 to coincide with the theatrical release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Fast & Furious 9, though, passed up this prime marketing opportunity as part of its overall promotional radio silence. There hasn’t even been an official image, let alone a trailer, released for the newest entry in the Fast & Furious saga, but that should change sooner rather than later.

As Vin Diesel announced in December 2019, the Fast & Furious 9 trailer will release during a concert on January 31, 2020. In an unusual move, the trailer drop will feature as part of a high-profile concert in Miama, which includes performances from Cardi B, Wiz Khalifa, Ludacris, and more. It’s an oddly fitting move for the franchise, and is aiming to help make the trailer unveiling its own unique event.

Interestingly, that also means the Fast & Furious 9 trailer will launch just two days before the Super Bowl, and it’s likely Fast & Furious 9 will have some sort of presence at that sports event as well. After all, the Super Bowl has served as the marketing launchpad for a number of previous Fast & Furious adventures in the past, particularly ones that, just like Fast & Furious 9, are being released in the summertime.

Memorial Day 2013 blockbuster Fast & Furious 6 kicked off its marketing campaign with a one-minute-long spot during the Big Game. Meanwhile, last year Hobbs & Shaw released its first trailer just two days before the Super Bowl, before subsequently dropping a commercial during the game as well. The marketing plans for both of these previous Fast & Furious titles, particularly Hobbs & Shaw, seem to be blueprints Fast & Furious 9 is adhering to quite closely in its own promotional campaign.

While the use of a live concert to premiere a trailer is a first for the franchise, Fast & Furious 9’s timing of using the Super Bowl to help start a blockbuster’s marketing campaign with a bang is very much in keeping with the spirit of its predecessors. Like previous outings, Fast & Furious 9 has been kept under wraps prior to its first trailer. But the fact that its first trailer is confirmed to debut alongside a splashy concert, and will also likely make some kind of appearance at the next Super Bowl, means that the next Dominic Toretto adventure won’t be concealed for much longer.
