Vin Diesel has confirmed the first trailer for Fast & Furious 9 will arrive in January 2020. It’s been more than two years since audiences last saw Diesel’s Dominic “Dom” Toretto on the big screen in the eighth Fast & Furious film, The Fate of the Furious. Of course, the greater brand has continued to make headlines since then thanks to the success of this summer’s spinoff, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Later this month, the franchise will further expand to the small screen with Netflix’s animated Fast & Furious: Spy Racers series.

Diesel hasn’t been taking it easy recently either, having spent most of the past several months shooting Fast & Furious 9 with his trusted director Justin Lin (who previously helmed the third through sixth Fast & Furious movies). Production on the film wrapped in mid-November, and many fans have been predicting the trailer will debut with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in theaters next week. And while there is something Fast & Furious-related coming in the next 8 days, Diesel says it’s not a theatrical preview… not yet, anyway.

In a fresh post on Instagram, Diesel revealed the Fast & Furious 9 trailer will arrive next month (read: January 2020), with an official trailer release date announcement coming on December 18. You can check out his post in the space below.

Admittedly, this comes as surprising news. The first trailer for The Fate of the Furious arrive in December 2016 and screened alongside Rogue One: A Star Wars Story over the weeks that followed, allowing the film to kick off its marketing campaign with a strong showing. It stood to reason Universal would do something similar by dropping the Fast & Furious 9 trailer in time to screen it with The Rise of Skywalker this month, but that isn’t happening. Then again, if they had gone that route, the trailer would’ve had to compete with the newly-unveiled previews for 2020 movies like Black Widow, No Time to Die, and Wonder Woman 1984 for attention over the winter holidays. That’s to say, Universal’s decision to hold off on promoting Fast & Furious 9 until things slow down in January may prove to be a wise one.

Until then, there are plenty of ways for Universal and Diesel to further drum up interest in Fast & Furious 9 ahead of the trailer launch. It’s possible the studio will announce the film’s official title and maybe even unveil a teaser poster when it confirms the trailer release date next week. Alternatively, they could start to roll out the first-look images throughout the remaining weeks of 2019 - assuming they don’t do both, that is. As for when, exactly, the first Fast & Furious 9 trailer will premiere: a New Year’s Day release isn’t out of the question, and would help to get things started on the right foot. Failing that, Universal may hold off until mid-January and drop it with that month’s big action movie sequel, Bad Boys for Life.
