The Fast & Furious 9 trailer teaser offers a sneak peek at Dom’s (Vin Diesel) life with his new family: Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and his son Brian. And though all seems well in the preview, there’s clearly trouble on the horizon, with Letty passing Dom’s prized necklace onto Brian with the warning that “It’s for protection… from what’s coming”.

Since its launch with The Fast and the Furious in 2001, the Fast & Furious brand has evolved from a simple neo-noir action movie about underground street racing to a globe-trotting adventure franchise on the scale of James Bond. Over that same amount of time, the series has allowed its core characters to develop and change as they age, with Diesel’s Dominic Toretto becoming a husband in Furious Seven (after it’s revealed he and Letty married in secret) and then a father in its followup, The Fate of the Furious. That trend will continue with Fast & Furious 9, which will reportedly be the second to last mainline entry in the property (spinoffs like Hobbs & Shaw aside).

With the Fast & Furious 9 trailer confirmed to premiere as part of a live concert event this Friday, January 31, Diesel and Universal are providing a sneak peek at the preview ahead of time. The pair have now released the first footage from the film online, which you can watch in the space below (courtesy of Fandango).

Dom and Letty were ready to settle down and raise Brian by the end of Fate of the Furious, so it looks like Fast & Furious 9 will pick up at a logical place in the story from there. The movie’s actual plot is under-wraps ahead of its trailer’s release, but it should have something to do with the villainous Cipher (Charlize Theron), who will no doubt be out for revenge against Dom after he and his family foiled her plans in Fate of the Furious. Dom may be looking for some payback as well, considering Cipher held Brian and his biological mother Elena (Elsa Pataky) hostage to make Dom work for her, only to kill Elena when Dom failed to completely obey her commands. Then again, now that he’s a father, the older and more mature Dom is probably more concerned about making sure Cipher no longer poses a danger to those he loves, which would explain why he and Letty are begrudgingly returning to the battlefield.

With Justin Lin back directing for the first time since Fast & Furious 6, the hope is Fast & Furious 9 will be better at balancing its dramatic scenes and action sequences than Fate of the Furious arguably was. That film also suffered from having to serve as a glorified backdoor pilot for Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs & Shaw spinoff, resulting in an altogether overstuffed narrative. Fortunately, F9 (as Fast & Furious 9 is being referred to in its official marketing material) has less on its plate and should be better able to focus on Dom and his family’s story as a result. Rest assured, however, there will still be plenty of high-octane set pieces to go around, as the full-length trailer is sure to highlight later this week.
