Blumhouse Productions’ Fantasy Island is slated for release on February 14, 2020. The film is based on the ABC television series of the same name, which ran from 1977-1984 and was created by Gene Levitt.

Fantasy Island may be another feather in the cap for Blumhouse, who has seen great success with various types of horror films in the past; they usually bank on a young adult audience, though have branched out to cover other ground with their acquisition of major franchises, such as Halloween. Currently, Fantasy Island has not yet announced a rating, but Blumhouse may be banking on another PG-13 horror movie, as it has done with various levels of success in the past with films such as Happy Death Day and Black Christmas; the former was very successful, while the latter flopped.

Traditionally, however, Blumhouse doesn’t require a massive box office for their movies to be successful, as they have launched a formula where they can make crisp, stream-lined horror films with minimal budget that make enough money to fund the rest of their projects without too much strain. Here’s what we know about Fantasy Island so far.

What Will Fantasy Island’s Story Be About?

Similarly to the ABC television series, Fantasy Island is based around a tropical island run by the mysterious Mr. Roarke (Pena), who aspires to make the fantasies of his guests come true. Soon after arrival, the guests’ fantasies turn to nightmares and must figure out how to solve the island’s mystery in order to escape with their lives. The television series wasn’t traditionally horror, though it have some horror elements and plots including murder, kidnapping, and other misfortunes, though Roarke in the series was benevolent and typically came to his guests’ rescue when their wishes got out of control, despite telling them that he’s powerless and they must see their fantasies through.

Fantasy Island has been described as a mix between Westworld and The Cabin in the Woods, which implies a technological bend to the story, whereas the television series was more fantastical and supernaturally oriented in theme.
