A new fan poster imagines the Silver Surfer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Created by Jack Kirby, Silver Surfer made his debut in 1966. A humanoid with metallic skin, Silver Surfer has the ability to travel through space thanks to a craft which resembles a surfboard. The character is routinely ranked among the greatest comic book creations of all time, combining his unique mode of transportation with a heavy burden which unites his depiction with the likes of Batman and Spider-Man. However, in spite of his popularity and longevity, Silver Surfer has not been portrayed in live-action adaptations with much frequency. His one appearance in a major live-action movie, as part of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, was ultimately an unsuccessful attempt at exploring a spinoff solo film.
In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in bringing Silver Surfer to the big screen. It was announced, back in February 2018, that writer Brian K. Vaughan was working on a script for a movie centering around the iconic Marvel character. Adam McKay, director of The Big Short and Vice, has also expressed interest in directing a Silver Surfer adaptation. While speculation about the project persists, a new fan poster by Erathrim, imagines the Marvel stalwart finally making his appearance in the MCU.
Given his long history, a Silver Surfer movie would have a lot of potential threads to pull on. Even though he hasn’t been a factor in many films, Silver Surfer has played a role in several animated works over the decades. The character has also been a fixture in Marvel video games. It may be the case that Silver Surfer’s design and backstory lend themselves better to certain mediums over others, but the MCU has shown itself quite capable of pulling off unlikely successes such as the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
Silver Surfer is only one of the characters that fans want to see in the MCU. X-Men, Excalibur, and Deadpool have all received imagined posters of their own. It’s almost a guarantee that these well-known personas will be folded into the MCU eventually, though it might not happen anytime soon.
