With next year’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2, Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling will continue their second Wizarding World franchise. And while Harry and his friends won’t be showing up anytime soon — without a healthy time jump — the movies will explore the relationship between Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore. They’ll also focus on Newt’s complicated history with Leta Lestrange in an arc that may see Zoë Kravitz return for multiple films. Given her progeny’s infamy, there’s a lot of lore that could be mined from the elder Lestrange. And then there’s Grindelwald.

The first film did a bang up job of keeping audiences in the dark about the notorious dark wizard. While we knew he’d appear, the switcheroo at the end made for one heck of a finale. Now, Newt’s magizoological journeys will take a back seat to the growing war between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. And now that Johnny Depp has been unmasked as the rogue, fans have been left wondering whether Colin Farrell’s Graves will ever reappear. Though everything we saw of him was a charade, Grindelwald’s use of Polyjuice Potion means the real Graves is presumably still out there somewhere.

Sadly, however, when MTV caught up with Farrell and asked him if he was slated to return, he nixed the prospect.

That said, Farrell also states in the interview that he wouldn’t be able to say if he was contracted to return. If he doesn’t show up again, however, Farrell has a pretty morbid fan theory as to why.

“It was always written that that was it.”

Leading up to this hilariously dark theory, Farrell proves his knowledge of Potter lore by discussing how the use of Polyjuice Potion means the subject has to still be alive. Assuming Grindelwald doesn’t reveal Graves’ location, though, he could very well have perished following the conclusion of the film. The rest of the interview sees Farrell praising Patrick Stewart’s performance in Logan and tearing up upon meeting Gary Oldman in the middle of answering a question.

“Maybe he’s buried in a shallow grave and he’s going to die of starvation 17 hours after the film ends.”

Meanwhile, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 continues to move along without Farrell. Rowling is writing the script and the film is said to start shooting in the fall. We’ve even heard some plot rumors, so we’ll likely get more official information soon. If nothing else, perhaps Rowling will write a story on Pottermore telling the untold tale of Percival Graves. Until then, we’ll brings you news of all things Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2.
