Fan posters have been appearing online for Christopher Nolan’s next film Tenet, and one in particular is convincing in its simplicity. Set for release on July 17, 2020, details about the film are currently being kept under lock and key, quite literally in the case of Robert Pattinson’s script read, leading to wide and wild speculation as to what can be expected from it.
The few fragments of information that have been released about the film describe it as “an action epic evolving from the world international espionage,” which is as deliberately vague as it is open to interpretation. It’s set to star John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh, all of whom have yet to have their roles or prominence in the film specified in any way.
One of the most recent efforts of fan posters, from Twitter account tarssauce, has been assumed by many to be the read deal. It sees a plain white image with the letters of the film’s title arranged as a simple ambigram, as was seen on a clapperboard in a set photo, and such is the belief in its authenticity that it has been adopted as the image on the film’s IMDb page, although crucially with its creator’s watermark cropped from the bottom. A number of other posters have been created over the past few months, each portraying a certain amount of surreality or ambiguity that fits with how little is known about the film, as well as the imagery evoking the prevailing belief that the film will be a return to Nolan’s mind-bending and time-twisting narratives of the likes of Inception, Interstellar and Memento.
It should be clarified that none of these posters currently circulating online are the slightest bit official, and that any marketing material about the film is yet to be forthcoming. It’s most likely a deliberate ploy; by telling people as little as possible about what the film will entail, it leads to varied discussions and theorizing among fans about what they think they can expect from the film, thus keeping it in the public consciousness while also allowing the film itself to maintain an unbreakable mystique that will only be lifted when Nolan himself wills it.
The fan posters are an extension of these discussions, each a visual representation of their perception of Nolan’s style of filmmaking, as well as the perceived tone of the film and the fragmentary details revealed in the brief, cinema-exclusive trailer. When we finally know more about Tenet we’ll see how accurate people were in their conjecture, but for now the artistic efforts of fans is as close as we’re going to get.
