An Instagram artist created a rendition of Arrow’s John Diggle as Green Lantern. The recent series finale of Arrow, the flagship show of the Arrowverse, closed out its eight-season run by hinting at bigger things on the horizon for Diggle, played by David Ramsey. Along with tearful goodbyes to Oliver Queen, who died in an earlier episode, the finale featured a tease that suggests Diggle becomes Green Lantern.
Throughout Arrow’s run, two characters have remained inseparable friends since the very beginning: Oliver Queen and John Diggle. Unlike the Emerald Archer, John Diggle never existed in the pages of the DC Comics that inspired the CW series. Diggle would adopt his own hero identity as Spartan, and even served as a Green Arrow fill-in a few times. One long-running fan theory was that Diggle was a nod to John Stewart, a character who took on the Green Lantern mantle in comics. The show has hinted at this, even implying Diggle was Green Lantern on another Earth. With the tease at the end of Arrow, fans are discussing if Diggle is going to truly adopt the role, and how Ramsey might look in the costume.
One artist has made Diggle as Green Lantern a reality. An Instagram user named spdrmnkyxxiii posted a digital rendering of David Ramsey’s Diggle in the Green Lantern suit. Fans will no doubt appreciate the artwork, and probably hope Diggle ends up with a costume like it someday soon. Check out the rendition below.
Many jaws would certainly drop if Diggle showed up wearing this costume anywhere across the Arrowverse. Interestingly, Diggle will appear on an upcoming episode of The Flash, but the Green Lantern tease will not be addressed. It remains to be seen what Diggle’s future is in the Arrowverse. He and his family are moving to Metropolis, potentially setting up appearances in Superman and Lois. There’s also the Green Lantern Corps series on HBO Max, which is being developed by Arrowverse producer Greg Berlanti. For the moment, fans will have to wait and see if Ramsey is cast as Diggle on any of these spin-offs.
Diggle might be Oliver’s rock, but he’s also formed bonds with many characters in Arrow. He had a special connection with Rene and encouraged Roy to let go of his guilt to be a hero again. Diggle has been a loyal friend, ally, husband, and father. Although he didn’t save the multiverse (that honor goes to Oliver), Diggle has saved a number of lives throughout the years. He would certainly be a worthy addition to the Green Lantern Corps.
