Writer Derek Kolstad teases how The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will tackle Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) assumption of the Captain America mantle. The creator of the John Wick franchise was a late addition to the roster of writers for the upcoming series. Serving as the inaugural Marvel Studios small screen project for Disney+, it is set to roll out in the fall of next year.
The show will feature Falcon teaming up with Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier for their own adventure. Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will also see the return of some familiar faces from the franchise, such as Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter and Daniel Brühl’s Baron Zemo - the latter of whom will be the primary antagonist of the narrative. Plot specifics for the show remains under wraps thus far, but Kolstad is teasing a major plot point with regards to the idea that Sam is Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) chosen heir as the Star Spangled Avenger.
During a recent question and answer session hosted by Discussing Film on Twitter, Kolstad was asked about his upcoming projects including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier wherein he admitted that it’s “intimidating” to approach the first live-action adaptation of Sam Wilson’s time as Captain America. However, when pressed about it, the writer posed an interesting idea that Falcon may not exactly be Captain America in the show. When asked, “[What’s it like] having to carry on the Russo brother’s [sic] torch with the character of Captain America being Sam Wilson now?” Kolstad responded in a now deleted tweet, “But… is he?”
Kolstad’s comment may have something to do with the casting of Wyatt Russell as John Walker aka. U.S. Agent. Introduced in 1986 as the supervillain to Super-Patriot, the character was created as a contrast to Captain America’s core message of good patriotism. He eventually assumes the mantle of Captain America, which might also be the case in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. If this is indeed the case, it fits with the previously reported plot details for the show that the U.S. Government is against the idea of Sam being Captain America and carrying the iconic shield. Perhaps Walker is the organization’s pick as their next Captain America, resulting in a potential conflict with Sam.
Fans were quick to point out how the series’ title is quite confusing considering Steve did officially pass the mantle of Captain America to Sam, but evidence is piling up that there’ll be a lot more outside resistance to the idea. Between Kolstad’s recent comments and the inclusion of U.S. Agent, not to mention Mackie repeatedly saying he is still Falcon, chances are that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will tackle how Sam ultimately assumes the Captain America persona - a better route rather than him immediately operating as the next iteration of the superhero. This way, the show is able to give Sam his own hero’s journey, which can help viewers be more emotionally invested in the character like they were with the original version of the super soldier.
