Writer Derek Kolstad has revealed that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier won’t succumb fully to the darkness of its subject matter and the post-blip world. Marvel Studios wrapped up a decade’s worth of storytelling earlier this year, concluding a huge 22-film saga with Avengers: Endgame. Garnering positive reviews, the film recently became the highest-grossing film of all time. The MCU showed no signs of stopping, however, quickly following it up with Spider-Man: Far From Home. The term “blip” was first utilized in the solo Spidey sequel, in reference to the sudden return of everybody who had previously been wiped from existence by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.
As well as dominating the big screen, the Disney-owned juggernaut will branch out into the world of television via the Disney+ streaming service. A number of shows have already been confirmed, including Loki and WandaVision. Unlike previous Marvel TV efforts, the new shows will fully intersect with the movies. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is set to be the first one released. With Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their roles of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, respectively, the show will see them once again come up against Daniel Brühl’s Baron Zemo. It’ll also mark the first appearance of the titular characters since an elderly and retired Cap (Chris Evans) passed the shield and Captain America moniker to Sam Wilson.
Taking over the DiscussingFilm account on Twitter, Kolstad spent hours answering questions from fans. The topics ranged from his personal journey as a screenwriter to the various projects both past, present, and future. Helping to write all six episodes of the inaugural Disney+ Marvel show, discussion inevitably turned to The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. With a Twitter user named Craig Simmons enquiring as to the tone of the highly-anticipated series, Kolstad had this to say:
As well as penning the previous installments, Kolstad will return to write John Wick 4 - which he jokily stated will take the infamous assassin to space. He is also credited with writing the script for the Just Cause adaptation and also a Hitman TV series for Hulu. Though he is serving on the writing staff, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series will be overseen by Malcolm Spellman (Empire). Meanwhile, Kari Skogland will direct all six episodes. The series will also see the return of Sharon Carter and the introduction of John Walker aka US Agent. The latter of which could contribute to a mystery Kolstad has teased.
Although Spider-Man: Far From Home touched on the phenomena, it appears that the Disney+ show will further delve into the repercussions. After all, billions of people returning all at once after five years of displacement and worldwide changes would assuredly come with its own set of problems and resulting chaos. The fact that the shows, rather than the movies, will explore this makes sense. A full series has a lot more of an overall runtime and thus more room to breathe than big-screen outings. Such, also, is why the center of the shows will be characters who largely never received their own movies. That being said, this is the MCU rather than the DCEU. As such, if it’s going to tonally connect to the movies, it would need to balance said darker undertones with the traditional levels of humor. Later describing the series as “Band of Brothers by way of Lethal Weapon”, Kolstad seems keenly aware of that fact. Fans, however, will simply to have to wait and see how it all comes together.
