The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie has tried his hand at throwing Captain America’s shield, and it sounds like it’s not as easy as it looks. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, set to arrive this August, will be the first MCU-set show to premiere on Disney’s streaming service Disney+. It will feature Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their roles as Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) closest allies Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Additional cast members include Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl, Wyatt Russell, and the recently announced Carl Lumbly.

Most of the plot details for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier have been kept tightly under wraps, but one thing is certain: The show will deal with Sam’s new role as Captain America. In the closing moments of Endgame, an older Steve passed on the Captain America shield to Sam. It was widely assumed Sam would immediately become the next Cap, but it sounds like the United States government has taken some issue with that, instead opting to put forward their own pick for the job, John Walker/U.S. Agent (Russell). While Sam might have to fight for his right to be Cap, the first Falcon and Winter Soldier footage did show Sam throwing the shield similar to how Steve used to.

While talking to ComicBook.com to promote the new season of his Netflix show Altered Carbon, Mackie revealed a bit of what goes into throwing the iconic shield. While on screen it may look easy, Mackie suggested otherwise when he said he was shocked the Super Bowl TV spot for the show featured him performing the action. As Mackie explained:

Mackie then went on to explain that the shield itself, which within the Marvel universe is made of the fictional metal vibranium, is actually quite heavy. According to Mackie, “That thing is it’s like 12 pounds. So you’re standing there with 12 pounds on your arm all day after a while your shoulder just gives. So, we have some pretty cool shield throwing sequences.” He also hinted that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will have plenty of action in it despite being a Disney+ show, saying, “You know, it’s Marvel so the story’s there, the character’s there, but those action set pieces are just as vast.”

I was surprised that they used me because you have a double, a dude that looks like you who’s like a gymnast and he does all this stuff. That’s when they’re like, ‘All right, Anthony, you do it.’ And I’m like, ‘Dude, you just saw what this dude did! How you gonna asked me to do that?’ So, I was surprised when I saw the Super Bowl trailer that they actually used me throwing the shield.

As the first Marvel Disney+ show, expectations for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are high. If the story and action pieces aren’t up to the typical Marvel standard, fans might consider it a disappointment. However, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has a lot of things going for it, and it looks like it can be a success. Sam’s transition from Falcon to Captain America, as well as the battle that’s brewing for the Cap position, should make for an excellent storyline. This will be the first time Sam will get a story that’s separate from Steve, and hopefully it will do his character justice. The potential inclusion of another black Captain America would help deepen the storyline as well. The image of Sam throwing the shield was thrilling to witness, and fans will get to see more of it when the show arrives on Disney+.
