New plot details for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier reportedly reveal Isaiah Bradley, another black Captain America, will be featured. Steve Rogers’ days as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are over after Avengers: Endgame. After going back in time to return the Infinity Stones and live a full life with Peggy Carter, Steve passed on the Captain America mantle and shield to Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie).
Although it originally appeared as though Sam would immediately become the MCU’s new Captain America, the story of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier shows that may not be the case. The first trailer for the series shows that Sam is practicing throwing the shield but also that he isn’t the only one to use it. John Walker aka U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) will also have the shield, as he is reportedly the government’s choice to be the new face of the country. This not only means that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier could show Sam stripped of his title and shield, but also that it will feature another version of Captain America from the comics.
According to new details on the Disney+ original series, a third version of Captain America will reportedly be included as well. In a report from Slashfilm, the site claims their sources have told them that Isaiah Bradley, the original black Captain America, will have a part to play in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Their report states that Sam initially refuses to become Captain America, but later changes his mind after learning about Isaiah Bradley and the secret history of the United States’ super soldier program.
In the comics, Isaiah Bradley is one of 300 soldiers who was recruited by the government to take part in their continued attempts to create super soldiers after the apparent death of Captain America. He was one of the few to survive the experiments and donned the Captain America suit in his final mission, but Bradley was given a life long prison sentence for that act, where his mind and body deteriorated over time due to side effects of the super soldier serum. Bradley was eventually released and became the grandfather of Eli Bradley, a young man who became known as Patriot and helped found the Young Avengers.
The MCU has yet to fully explore the idea that super soldier experiments continued after Rogers, but now The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will reportedly get that chance. With Sam learning the truth about the Captain America mantle, the coverup of Bradley’s service could be what motivates him to be the next black Captain America. If this is the story that the series tells, Sam won’t just follow in the footsteps of his best friend but can raise awareness for the true legacy of the mantle. He could even be the one who helps train Patriot to follow in his grandfather’s heroic footsteps.
At this point, it is unknown if the role of Isaiah Bradley has been filled for the series, though. These details come after Carl Lumbly joined the cast of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier in an unknown role. Slashfilm’s report can’t confirm that he is playing this role, although it would make sense for that to be the case. Thankfully, with The Falcon and The Winter Soldier coming out in August on Disney+, it won’t be too long before Isaiah Bradley reportedly makes his MCU debut.
