Disney reveals fans can expect a third live-action Star Wars TV show will arrive on Disney+ along with The Mandalorian and the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Cassian Andor spinoff series. Disney is gearing up to launch Disney+ later this year, but the company has been discussing the streaming service and what it will include for some time now. In addition to classic Disney animated movies and other theatrical releases, the streamer will also offer original movies and TV shows. For instance, a handful of Marvel TV shows are in the works, including Loki, WandaVision and Falcon and Winter Soldier. But Disney also has plans for Star Wars content on Disney+.
While Disney+ will stream theatrical Star Wars movies, Lucasfilm is also working on a handful of TV shows set in a galaxy far, far away. The first of these is The Mandalorian TV show, which premieres when Disney+ launches on Nov. 12. The second is a Rogue One prequel focused on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) before the events of the movie. The Rogue One prequel won’t premiere until 2021 on Disney+, but Disney and Lucasfilm have further plans for the Star Wars IP on streaming.
During a Q&A session with Disney CEO Bob Iger at the 6th Annual MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit, the executive revealed fans can expect a third live-action Star Wars TV show to land on Disney+ in the future (h/t Attractions Magazine/Twitter). No information about the third Star Wars series, such as what it will be about or when it will premiere, was revealed.
With the wide world of Star Wars at their fingertips, it’s unclear what exactly the third live-action Star Wars series might be. Both announced shows have connections to the movies, with The Mandalorian following after the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, while the Cassian Andor series is a direct prequel to Rogue One. As such, whatever the third series is, it’ll likely have some kind of connection to one or more of the movies. Whether that means it’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi property fans have wanted for some time or perhaps a spinoff from the new trilogy following the Knights of Ren, it’s anyone’s guess.
As for when the TV show will premiere, with the Rogue One prequel not debuting until 2021, this third series may not air until 2023 - that is, if Disney and Lucasfilm push this show until after the Cassian Andor series. Since nothing is yet known about this third Star Wars show, it’s unlikely to debut in between The Mandalorian and Rogue One series. As such, it won’t arrive until the Rogue One spinoff concludes its first season, placing it in 2022 or 2023. So fans will have to wait quite some time for the third live-action Star Wars TV show on Disney+, but what exactly Lucasfilm has planned for this series should be announced in the coming years. Besides, in addition to the TV shows, Disney and Lucasfilm launch a new Star Wars movie series from Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss in 2022. So there’s plenty of Star Wars content planned for the coming years.
