Director Rob Zombie is back with horror icon Sid Haig in 3 From Hell, and Screen Rant has an exclusive clip to share with fans of uncomfortably brutal terror. When he transitioned from making rock and roll music to making movies, Zombie truly put the visceral “grind” back into grindhouse cinema. From House of 1000 Corpses to his Halloween remakes, Zombie’s films have always pushed boundaries with shocking violence, provocative themes, and dangerously sympathetic characterization. From the looks of things, 3 From Hell will continue this proud and gory tradition.
While the plot of the film is being kept tightly under wraps (always a tough mission to accomplish in today’s digital-first world of social media and information proliferation), 3 From Hell picks up where The Devil’s Rejects left off, with the three surviving members of the Firefly Family locked up in prison, but one imagines it won’t be long before they break out to wreak their own sadistic brand of havoc on the arguably innocent populace.
Screen Rant has an exclusive clip from 3 From Hell, showcasing an intimate scene between a journalist and Captain Spaulding, played by the legendary Sid Haig. The clip showcases director Zombie’s love of 1970s-style low-fi filmmaking, with raw colors and deep film grain giving the film a textured, dirty look that fits well with 3 From Hell’s graphic and intimate subject matter.
Based on the clip above, 3 From Hell aims to dive deep into the psyches of its psychotic protagonists, while implicating the masses who follow their crimes with a jolly appetite for the carnage they unleash. Perhaps it’s a statement on the pop culture fascination with the “true crime” genre, which gleefully turns the lowest of humanity into easily consumed entertainment.
Haig is front and center in the clip, and he can easily be seen as the franchise’s secret weapon. The 80-year-old actor has been on television and film since the 1960s, and has played every type of role imaginable over his prolific career. The part of Captain Spaulding in Zombie’s Firefly Family films is possibly his most iconic work, and for good reason. With or without terrifying clown makeup, the character is an electrifying presence, a commanding authority figure, and a menacing titan of terror.
Courtesy of Fathom Events, 3 From Hell is getting a nationwide release for three days only. The unrated cut of the film will be played with a different helping of unique additional content on each night: night one features an extended introduction from Zombie himself, night two includes an extensive behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the film, and the third and final night pairs the film with its 2005 predecessor, The Devil’s Rejects. All told, it will be one heck of an event for horror fans.
3 From Hell also stars Sherri Moon Zombie, Bill Moseley, Danny Trejo, and Dee Wallace, and hits theaters for a three day run starting on September 16. Click here to purchase tickets from the Fathom Events website.
