To anybody who ever said horror needed to be serious, we can simply point to Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Terror from Ahoy Comics. Taking classic tales from the legendary writer and giving them a… new spin, the second series shows that there is no limit to what horrifying stories can be made absolutely ridiculous.
When it was launched with the promise of giving readers “subversive parodies of classic Poe stories,” few knew just what that would actually entail. Now entering Season Two of the Snifter series, Ahoy reader know to expect Poe playing host to baffling batches of parodied horror (not too surprising for those already reading Ahoy’s take on DC’s dynamic duo, Dragonfly & Dragonflyman). And in our exclusive preview of Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Terror Season Two #3, it’s Poe’s ‘The Pit and The Pendulum’ being re-imagined as a modern case of constant drugging. Obviously.
For those unfamiliar with the original short story from Poe, it’s a tale of psychological and physical torture faced by an imprisoned man (set against the backdrop of the Spanish Inquisition). Putting him through lightless rooms, deadly falls, and allying with prison rats, the re-imagining for Snifter of Terror follows a soldier, as mentioned above, being regularly drugged via whiskey and bologna sandwiches. Just in case anyone was unclear on what kind of ’re-imagining’ the storytelling team is after. Check out the preview pages below:
The re-imagining is courtesy of Paul Constant, Alan Robinson, and Andy Troy. Readers of Ahoy’s other books will know Constant and Robinson for their work on Planet of The Nerds, now in development for a film adaptation from Paramount Pictures. The full issue solicitation details and plot synopsis can be found below.
