It turns out Final Cut Pro users have good reason to be jealous; and other apps could benefit a lot from implementing what Logic has done. It’s some of the best support yet, and one feature specifically, fully customizable banks of buttons for keyboard shortcuts, is something I’d love to see other apps adopt....

When Apple posted the Messages Beta for the Mac over four years ago, I knew I would feel right at home. iChat was long overdue for an upgrade, and bringing iMessage to the Mac would further bridge the divide between iOS and Mac OS X. I was excited to start messaging my friends and family from the comfort of my computer, until I realized, “Where’s the camera button?” Apple has included webcams in their line of notebook computers since the first generation of MacBooks....

Wifi-equipped cameras have long been one of those things that promise more than they deliver. In theory, you can take a photo on your camera and have it instantly and wirelessly transferred to your Mac. In practice, not so much. You either need to go via an iOS device, or go via a router with ridiculously-convoluted networking configuration required to make it work. Eye-Fi seems to be getting one step closer to the theory, announcing beta software at the Showstoppers CES event that allows photos to be sent direct from camera to Mac....

It looks as if the spin-off card game Fable Fortune will be shutting down, only a few years after it left the Steam Early Access program. Fable was one of the Xbox’s most unique RPG titles when it was originally released in 2004, and over time the franchise garnered a large fan following both because of and despite the fact that the series’ longtime figurehead, Peter Molyneux, continuously marketed the Fable games as being one of the greatest creations of all time....

Facebook continues to tighten security after the Cambridge Analytica saga. After recently explaining how it will comply with new privacy laws, it is now taking steps to stop apps posting to your profile … For apps that wanted to promote either themselves or some other message, the ability to post as you was one of the most prized permissions. It meant their posts got the same visibility as status updates posted by Facebook friends....

Facebook is said to be planning to launch its standalone news app with a list of media partners on board sometime next week. That’s according to Financial Times, which reports the app will be called Notify and include content from a list of media partners including CBS, The Washington Post, and Vogue. Reports of Facebook working on a separate mobile app focused on news rather than the social network first surfaced in early August....

Facebook is releasing a new app today called Mentions, an app exclusively for public figures with verified pages that previous reports noted the company was experimenting with. According to Facebook, the app is made specifically for actors, athletes, musicians, and other influencers and makes for a better experiencing when sharing content and interacting with fans. The app puts a bigger focus on sharing and viewing mentions from other users opposed to viewing content posted by others....

Facebook is out today with a big move for its Stories feature – ads for creators. While the platform is kicking off the new ad placements with a “very small” test, it’s hoping to expand it quickly and this could also mean Instagram Stories gets the same treatment before long. Facebook has pushed hard against Apple’s upcoming ad tracking transparency feature that’s set to launch in “early spring.” As it expects to see ad losses from not having the same level of personal data from users in the near future, Facebook is working on alternative ways to let creators and advertisers monetize audiences with ad stickers for Stories (via The Verge)....

We’re not expecting to see Apple Glasses before 2022 at the earliest, but we’ve now seen a prototype of one rival effort: Facebook AR glasses. Interestingly, this prototype has no display and is entirely focused on an auditory experience. It’s part super-sophisticated hearing aid, part virtual reality device … The Facebook Reality Labs Research team revealed the prototype, which is likely just one element of an eventual commercial product. After a new trailer hinted at the imminent arrival of the Fantastic Four in the MCU, fans have been pretty stoked about what could unfold. It’s probably safe to assume that the new movie will steer clear of previous FF movie efforts. It may also be a good bet that the movie will draw on some of the classic comic book storylines from Marvel Comics’ first superhero team. Fans might expect the movie to cover the origin of the team, but thanks to sixty years of comic book history, there are a couple of different versions out there....

The Fido Alliance, an organization committed to eliminating the need for passwords, received a big boost last week when Apple signed up as a board member. Fido stands for Fast IDentity Online. Apple apparently wasn’t ready to announce its support immediately, as tweets from a Fido Alliance conference were quickly deleted, but as of today, the news is official… French site MacG spotted a now-deleted tweet that had a photo (below) of a conference slide showing the Apple logo and the text ‘New Board Member....

During a call with investors today, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the social network had reached over one billion mobile users. That’s up from only 945 million active users in the last quarter of last year, putting the total gain since then at about 55 million mobile users. The Facebook-owned photo app Instagram also announced a milestone today on its blog as it passed the 200 million user mark. A quarter of those users joined in just the last six months....

Spider-Man: Far From Home’s rerelease was a commercial success, even when compared to Avengers: Endgame. This summer, two MCU installments followed the same release pattern. After a wildly fruitful initial run in theaters, both Endgame and Far From Home received theatrical rereleases that included additional content. In Endgame’s cast, there were multiple post-credits bonuses like a deleted scene and a Far From Home clip. Far From Home added several minutes of additional footage, such as the “Peter’s To-Do List” short film that will be available on the Blu-ray....
