Facebook today has officially started rolling out a new “Explore Feed” on mobile and desktop. While the company had originally tested the water with a small number of mobile users, it confirmed to TechCrunch that today marks the beginning of an official rollout. The new Explore Feed is Facebook’s way of presenting a wider breadth of content to users. As opposed to the standard posts from friends and Pages in the News Feed, the Explore Feed includes posts, articles, photos, videos, and more from sources that you don’t currently follow....

A number of hotel chains have been using smart home technology in their rooms for some time now, with Hilton yesterday announcing its own plans to take the idea one step further, with the ability to remember your connected room preferences and automatically apply them when you check into a new hotel. I love this idea, and I’d like to see Apple work with hotel chains to take the logical next step …...

Google Sky, originally developed for use in Google Earth, has since been ported to a web app – so now you can view the starry sky without installing any software at all. A quick visit to http://www.google.com/sky/ will take you straight to your portal for browsing the universe, or at least that which we have available. There are multiple sets of imagery available on Google Sky, but the real jewel here is the Hubble Showcase....

Facebook has said that it is shutting down its controversial ‘Facebook Research’ iPhone app, after it was disclosed that the company had repackaged its banned Onavo VPN app and was paying teens and adults $20/month to install it. Update: It turns out it wasn’t even Facebook’s decision to shutdown the iOS app – it was Apple. I don’t classify myself as an Apple fanboy. I mostly prefer Apple products over competing ones, and I do find life is easier if I allow myself to be assimilated by a single ecosystem, but my opinion pieces are variously critical and supportive of Apple – and I’m certainly not blind to cool tech offered by Apple competitors. Film and TV producer Adi Shankar has responded to Jim Carrey’s critical comments about the decision to redesign Sonic the Hedgehog. Upon the release of the first full Sonic the Hedgehog trailer for the movie featuring Sega’s blue speedster mascot, his CGI design received such a vociferous backlash that the film’s release was pushed back three months to allow the character to be redesigned and give the film’s VFX team enough time to re-render the his appearances....

Facebook will be rolling out a subscription tool soon that will allow publishers to put up paywalls for certain content on the social media platform. Recode reports that Facebook has worked out a deal with Apple that will allow the company to put up a paywall on certain content. The feature is already available on Android, and will now be able to bring it to iOS, as well. “It’s resolved,” Facebook executive Campbell Brown told Recode....

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will focus on Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Captain America’s shield. Marvel Studios’ inaugural series for Disney+ won’t premiere until next year, but production is already in full swing at Atlanta. Teaming up Steve Rogers’ best buds, Sam and Bucky (Sebastian Stan), the project will also see the return of familiar faces such as Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter and Daniel Brühl’s villainous Baron Zemo....

Writer Derek Kolstad teases how The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will tackle Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) assumption of the Captain America mantle.
