Facebook is testing a new feature designed to protect profile photos from being downloaded. The aim is to make women in particular feel more comfortable about uploading their photo to the service. Some scammers harvest photos from Facebook, especially those of women, for use in ads or dating frauds. When a user chooses to protect their photo, other people will no longer be able to download or share it. Additionally, you can choose to overlay a texture onto the photo, which Facebook research has found makes photos less likely to be misused....

According to multiple sources, Facebook will unveil a new service today that can identify television shows and music playing in the background. The new software, which will be available via an updated App Store app on iPhone and a Google Play app on Android, will work in tandem with your smartphone hardware’s microphone. Facebook is said to be integrating the feature so Facebook users can more easily share what music they are listening to or what TV show they are currently watching to their Timelines....

Facebook has announced that it has finally rebuilt its iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch app for speed. Facebook’s previous iOS apps displayed and loaded all content view customized embedded mobile sites, but this new update is completely reengineered using native tools. Facebook says that the new update runs twice as fast as previous versions of Facebook for iOS. Facebook released version 13.1 of its iOS client today with a rather uninteresting change log noting that the app had received “bug fixes” and nothing more.
